Outside the Abbey on a cold, rainy Friday lie poppies and small wooden crosses in remembrance of those who gave their lives for us.

Each cross carries its own special message of remembrance.

Among the dozen…

A few evenings ago, I drove myself and little miss baby to Warmley to embark on the first of what I plan to be a series of railway walks. I parked the car close to the signal box and set myself the challenge of getting to the next station and back. Warmley station marked the start of the walk. Not sure why, but I didn't take a photo of the station. Wish I had now. It has some evocative silhouettes of commuters standing on the old platforms. Anyway, I was soon past it and was head down, marching…

Friday before last, we trogged down to Minehead. After a wrong turn that took us off course for about 30 miles, we finally arrived.

Can't remember going there before. It's got a harbour and everything.

Earlier this month, off we went to the beach. Severn Beach that is. Not quite a "buckets and spades" beach, but pleasant nonetheless.

It has sand-dune-like grass.

Well, an advert I placed in the Trade-It last week for a sofa I no longer need certainly generated a lot of interest. Having placed it in the "free to collector" section, I've had of the order 10 calls. The end result, sadly, is, as yet, not so positive.
Here's just a selection of the calls I've received.
Caller 1: Sounds keen. Calls several times while I was out and leaves a message, wanting to find out the width of it.
"Two metres" said I.
"Oh" came the reply, "I shall have to do some measur…

May bank holiday saw us take to the water at Pulteney Bridge.

All the years I've been in the area and I'd never been on a boat trip. Saw a side of Bath I'd never seen before.

Last weekend, we decided it was about time we got around to visiting Portishead and Clevedon. So that's precisely what we did.
First stop was Portishead.

Lovely place. I didn't realise it even has its own lighthouse (or two).

This evening, I visited several places I'd never visited before.
First stop; Avoncliff.
Well, actually, I had been through there on a barge before. And on a train. But not stopped there.

It must have one of the prettiest stations in the area.

My wife recently bought me this hand mower. It's absolutely brilliant and makes mowing the lawn a pleasure. No faffing around with extension leads means it's a breeze to give the lawn a quick trim whenever the mood takes me. It's quiet enough to use late into the evening. Using no electricity makes it both greener, safer and more controlled. All this and it also gives a better cut than my old hover mower. Why would anyone want to use anything else?

Before getting rid of my old shed, I canibalised it, removing various fittings for later re-use. I particularly liked the tags attached to these shelf brackets.

Is it me or do we get gazillions of charity bags delivered round here? Here's what we've collected in recent months. As if to emphasise my point, a couple of hours after I took this photo, another one arrived! How many old clothes do they think we have?

Loadsa people, evidently. I advertised this tatty old thing on Bath Freecycle and got over 15 requests for it.

It went to a bloke who balanced it on top his Volvo. Disassembled, of course.

Yesterday I posted on my Blog (http://voicerev-sharemyjourney.blogspot.com/) a tale about a haunted cellar in Corsham High Street which has stirred a few thoughts in my readers. I'm interested in collecting together as many tales of strange and spooky happenings from the Corsham area as possible. If you have a story then why not email me with it at colingordon-farleigh@tiscali.co.uk. If I get enough stories then I intend to gather them into a small booklet to be published towards the end of the…

I'm a recent convert to composting.
Yesterday, I harvested the equivalent of two or three bags of compost. It's very satisfying seeing the direct result of my efforts to turn waste into something useful. You don't get that feedback with recycling cans, etc.
It's been a learning experience. Here's what I've found:
1. Don't waste money on one of those plastic compost bins. Build a big one from pallets. It allows air to circulate and rain to penetrate.
2. Turn the heap over now and again to assi…
